Top 5 best Java frameworks in 2018

Technology is continuously changing and it is a challenge for programmers to be up-to-date with the new changes.

Java is a robust and secure object-oriented programming language that was designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. Compiled Java code can run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation.

Before reading the top, let’s analyze what a “Web Framework” actually is. A Web Framework is a program that allows you to develop web applications. The framework aspect denotes a system or structure that you can modify to develop applications.

Java web frameworks are a type of web application framework designed to support Java development. Software framework are essential for the development of different web applications, such as web resources, web APIs, and web services.

In this article, I am going to share 5 most popular frameworks to learn in 2018. Java developers are in good demand and learning these frameworks enhances your chances of getting a good job.

Spring MVC (Model View Controller)

Spring is super popular and one of the best Java frameworks. Being the oldest and most used JVM web framework, Spring MVC has a massive community of followers who share numerous helpful tutorials. Writing a Spring-based Java application using Spring MVC is as simple as writing a core Java application.  Spring enhances modularity to improve readability of code and simplified injection to test data through POJOs. Another factor to mention is that spring’s view resolution and data binding is extremely flexible.

Spring even holds a conference called “SpringOne” each year. The website blog keep developers informed on every news related to Spring MVC. Moreover, Spring have some forums where developers ask and get responses to any questions related to this framework.

JSF – (JavaServer Faces)

JSF is an important part of Java EE and convenient for developers who use IDE (Integrated Development Environment) software.

JSF has Oracle’s support. This framework is easier to utilize namely because of wonderful documentation supplied by Oracle. In this complex documentation you will discover that you can use this framework for whatever you want to create in the Java programming language. JavaServer Faces contain excellent tools and rich libraries.

There are some things to take into consideration for developers who haven’t tried working with Java frameworks yet, JSF is recommended for programmers who have prior experience as it is quite complex.

GWT (Google Web Toolkit)

Google Web Toolkit comes directly from the most popular search engine and is an open source set of tools focused on building web interfaces. It allows web developers to create and maintain complex JavaScript front-end applications in Java.

Because GWT was developed by Google, it has a lot of great documentation, and the whole experience on Google Web Toolkit feels professional well-developed.

When the application is deployed, the GWT cross-compiler translates the Java application to JavaScript files. When needed, JavaScript can also be embedded directly into Java code, using Java comments. Plus, it is easy to learn and there are a lot of JavaScript libraries out there thus making developers appreciate the true power of GWT.

Another reason to use GWT is the fact that it develops very responsive applications.

You may not get all interfaces and functions because Google Web Toolkit is fast evolving and there are numerous versions of it and this is a little bit annoying.

Apache Struts is a free, open-source MVC (Model View Controller) framework that is used to create elegant, modern Java applications. It is used to develop Java EE web applications.

The main advantage of using Struts is that it is easy to test new code. It allows modular development and integration with additional components. Struts 2 is equipped with a net framework for numerous Java applications.

At the same time, it is a complex framework which isn’t very flexible. Struts contains many rules regarding the coding and designing of web applications. It takes a while to get accustomed to this multifaceted framework.

Hibernate can’t be ignored while talking about the best Java Frameworks for 2018. It is a very popular data-focused Framework known for ability to work with multiple databases by making tiny alterations in code. It contains the best features that help backend developers fine-tune data access layer. Hibernate is a very powerful, speedy, high-quality framework, which is easy to configure. Beyond that, the risk of data loss is low, but in case electricity goes off you can still lose your data.

In summary, Each Web Framework that we have listed contains its own advantages and disadvantages. All of the top five are good choices – it depends on your personal preference and on the scale of your application.

Another thing to take into consideration, in order to choose the framework that works best for you, is your own level of experience with Java and your experience with other Web Frameworks. If you don’t have experience working with all of this, then Google Web Frameworks may be the best option for you. But in case your application is complex, you might opt for something like Hibernate.

You have to be aware that once you commit to a framework and start leveraging its features, switching to another framework could lead to a significant amount of work.

What do you think? Which other frameworks should be added to the op best Java frameworks of the year?
